MAKING OF d The One Man Village [LB]

Directed by Simon El Habre

Shot in in Mount Lebanon (Lebanon) in December '07 and January '08
Making of directed by Sabine Choucair

Marc Karam - Director of Photography

I have been working with Simon ever since he started to prepare for this documentary. After a lengthy talk, we decided to shoot in High Definition with a pro-35 adaptor and cinema lenses. We are reproducing the life of a human being, as it is, to the spectator, and this is the best shooting format to help us achieve this objective.
What is great about HD is that it has been developed in a way that we could use the mid-tones and low lights. There's no need for additional lights in order to shoot. This helps a lot in documentaries since there is no time to work on the lights first and second, there is no budget for that.
Another aspect that made us work with the High Definition format is that we would like to blow the film on 35mm. We have already made a test with the laboratory and the quality is fine.
This is my first experience in documentaries. What is good about this one is that it has a great deal of sensibility, and subtlety in everything that happens with Semaan and his surrounding, add to the fact that no matter what we did, Semaan himself is a special individual. The final product will be consistent and refined yet most importantly, it will be telling something.
