Zakia TAHIRI ñ Director / Scriptwriter
Number One is a man called Aziz BIDAOUI who runs a clothing factory with a staff of fifty women. I thought this would create a perfect framework to talk about women through a man. So there are fifty female workers and the secretary, played by Khadija ASSAD. My Number One in the film is Aziz SAADALLAH, it’s an honour having him as the lead, he’s a remarkable guy and any female director would be happy to have him. He’s a sub-manager in charge of a clothing factory where fifty women work, all of whom have to wear overalls, everyone has to carry a number on their work shirt and Aziz SAADALLAH has the NUMBER ONE because he runs the factory. To start with I really wanted to make a film in Morocco, it was very important for me, I’m Moroccan but I’ve lived in Paris for 25 years, I often come to Morocco, I’ve worked there a lot, but I wanted to make my own film, I wanted to talk about women and men, which is the only subject in life that really interests me. It’s about each person’s sensibility, I really wanted to make a comedy, too, a bitter-sweet, sharp and gentle comedy, but still a comedy. I have a great cast and crew, I’m happy. There’s a lot of energy on set, people believe in the script, believe in the film, they’re happy to be here on set and that’s what matters.
