Gerald Sullivan - PRODUCTION DESIGNER
We started out prepping Captain Abou Raed by scouting locations all through Amman, knowing that we were going to build two key sets which was Abou Mourad and Abou Raed's place.
It's been a challenge working over here, different than what I'm used to do in Hollywood, different materials that we use, different sets of labor, different job descriptions for everyone. All in all it's been a wonderful experience. It's been frustrating but also very rewarding and beautiful.
The film has to do with a whole cross section of Amman from East to West. It's not about new, the texture is old, faded and during construction we would always have problems communicating and getting across the message that we really wanted this to be old and everyone wanted to give us their best work and couldn't understand why.
The communication has been the largest hurtle for me and some of the other American crew getting across what you need. There are different names in describing different materials such as 'maajoune' which is basically wall plaster. That was really a tough one to get understood.
