MAKING OF dCaptain Abu Raed [JO]

Directed by Amin Matalqa
Shot in Salf, Jordan 13-14/06/2007
Making of directed by Sabine Choucair

Nadine Toukan - CO-PRODUCER

I chose to work on this film because I was attracted to the scenario, because, after all, it’s the story which animates the spirit of the film.
I have been working on the pre-production of ‘Captain Abou Raed’ for two months and nearly two years on the scenario with Amin Matalqa.
The financing is 100% Jordanian. It came from various independent investors. Though one of the most important contributors to the project is Amin’s mother, Aida Matalqa. I believe that, as a first film, the mother has a crucial role to play in supporting her child. She’s willing to do anything for the work to succeed.
We’d like this film to be, as any other independent film, released in the four corners of the globe. We hope to have a rough cut by Autumn, and have access to major festivals in the last quarter of the year. We’d like the film to be distributed heavily in the region for it is highly important that each and everyone in the Arab World gets to see this film. The last Jordanian feature film has been produced in 1957, and this is the first feature in 50 years. This is a bit of a pressure, but we asked ourselves: how can it be so difficult to make a movie? People make movies everywhere in the world and it needs will.
Of course I have been encouraged to take part in this experience. This is what I’m going to do for the rest of my life: I want to continue my path as an independent producer for Arab films. This is just the beginning of a very long fun great passionate road.
